Saturday, October 28th 2023 saw us all gather at my stepdaughter, Ashley’s home, to watch our beloved Bokke when they beat the All-Blacks 12-11 in another nail-biter in the 2023 Rugby World Cup final, in Paris. The All-Blacks fought a tough battle, but the Bokke were in it to win it and had the support of some 65 million folk back home. We produced a magnificent defensive display, enabling us to win the Webb Ellis Cup for a record fourth time, returning it to a nation desperate for hope, amid the many challenges that we face in our country.
Such a significant event requires that we all partake in the ubiquitous braai [barbecue] and nothing is more welcoming than a mouth-watering boerie roll, smothered in mustard and tomato sauce! Indeed, it would be an insult to offer one’s guests anything other than this delicious South African delicacy!! As the evening progressed, and fingernails disappeared as quickly as the snacks and thirst quenchers! I noticed a distinct feeling creeping over us as we huddled close, screaming in unison for our boys. It was the feeling of being part of something bigger than ourselves, it was warmth/family/kindness/connectedness/ resulting in a sense of euphoria that I’m still feeling today.
A blended family such as ours, where we embrace our differences with humility and respect, provides the backdrop for shared, cohesive and positive communication and I cherish the time we spend together. How much more enriched and meaningful my life is, connected to this inspiring and delightful bunch of whom I’m enormously proud.
