Meeting up with a dear friend this morning, got me thinking about the importance and value that we place on friendships.

On the dreariest of days, they somehow bring the sparkle and zest back into our lives with a knowing look, a hug — in fact, their mere presence is enough to ensure a warm glow remains for the rest of the day.

Where would we be in life without them?

“Let’s have a coffee” conjures up images of warmth and companionship, not to mention the soothing fragrance of the bean as the barista expertly turns it into a work of art. Just the prospect of spending an hour or so in convivial company fills me with joy — so thank you, dear friends, you’ll never know how much you mean to me.

This morning saw us meeting at a busy neighbourhood grocer, where beloved canines are treated like royalty. Bowls of water and treats are placed strategically, allowing owners to unwind. Moms, tots, and lycra-clad grannies mingle in the warm sunshine, while friendly waitrons dash in and out with plated works of art and enough coffee to keep the nation on a permanent high!

Sometimes we need to share our innermost thoughts and fears, and who best to turn to than a dear friend? Perhaps we’re facing a life-changing event or we need advice on attire for that special occasion, whatever it is, it’s always easier with a friend.

Some of us have that special person living on the other side of the world. Visiting them can be an expensive exercise, but when our plans finally come together, there is simply no greater feeling, and it’s as if time has stood still as we’re transported to places and faces from the past.

Throughout our lives, friendships are one of the most valuable assets we possess. They play an enormous part in influencing us and encouraging us to be our very best selves, whatever our circumstances.

When life gets too demanding, as it invariably does, call a friend, grab a coffee, bask in the warm sunshine [if you live in the Southern hemisphere!] Relax, Recharge and Refresh “and feel your troubles melt like lemon drops, away above the chimney tops.”
