Barbe-Nicole Clicquot is a woman with a priceless gift, sometimes construed as a curse “Le Nez” giving her the rare ability to smell the heartbreaking smell of what could have been, the perfume of a pure heart or the stink of a lie, She also has the perfect nose for the champagne industry which she uses to her benefit when she inherits a vineyard from her late husband. She established Veuve-Clicquot the world-renowned Champagne winery and her determination and unique entrepreneurial skills earned her the reputation of the “Grande Dame of Champagne.”
Barbe-Nicole is a woman on a mission in early 1800s France. She is challenged on every front when her life intertwines with Napoleon Bonaparte. His laws cause her great strife and our protagonist is forced to change how she conducts her business to survive.
Barbe-Nicole employed many of the women at that time, their lives sadly ravaged as they lost their husbands to the Napoleonic wars. They became pickers, sorters, and bottlers in the Champagne industry where they found honest employment.
I was completely enthralled with this captivating and delicious story of a woman ahead of her time and I applaud the author for her superb skill in bringing it to life.
